Jane Hague, 92, lives alone and has trouble with balance and other physical challenges but didn’t want to give up her freedom and move to an assisted living facility. Until recently, Hague and her close friends, she calls “family,” feared for her safety, particularly as she entered and exited her home.

“Just before I heard from Builders Care, I was seriously considering moving to an assisted living facility,” said Hauge, a Fort Myers Beach resident. “But, then I received a phone call that would change the direction of the rest of my life. Builders Care offered to build me a ramp that would allow me to stay in my home, surrounded by the things I love.”

Hague’s home was in need of a ramp to improve her mobility. Before Builders Care completed the ramp, Jane was forced to climb three very steep steps into her home without her cane, a chore that proved extremely difficult and dangerous at times.

On Jan. 24, volunteers with Builders Care, the charitable agency of the Lee Building Industry Association, began construction of the 23’ ramp at Hague’s home. Construction was completed in just two days.

Shoreline Lumber Company provided all of the materials to build the ramp as well as a special AZEK pvc decking product that is designed to last longer in the extreme Florida weather. Other contributing companies included Harbor Springs Building Company, Nilles Design, BR Nieman Construction, Raymond Building Supply and many volunteers.

“I am always so grateful to be a part of this organization,” said Ron Paluck, CEO of Shoreline Lumber Company. “We are helping homeowners stay in their homes and live independently. This is what it’s all about.”
