Cape Coral charity run raises $17,000 for colorectal cancer patients

An annual charity run in Cape Coral has generated $17,000 toward colorectal cancer education, screening and treatment in Southwest Florida. Colorectal cancer, which is preventable, treatable and beatable, is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the country.

Nearly 200 participants flocked to the 12th annual Partners in Care Scope for Hope 5K Run, 2-Mile Walk and Kid’s Fun Run last month at Jaycee Park, supported by a group of about 50 race volunteers.

“We’re continuously grateful for the hometown support we receive each year in Cape Coral at Scope for Hope,” said Kathy Tolentino, director of the Fort Myers-based Partners in Care Foundation, which works across the country. “As a result, we’ll be better able to make the cancer journeys a bit easier for literally hundreds of patients and their families.”

Andreas Boehm of Cape Coral was the March 18 race’s top male finisher, while Christine Queeneville was the top female runner. First-place finishers in several age categories were also recognized.

The charitable foundation hosts a nationwide series of spring charity runs, with additional events scheduled in California, Colorado, North and South Carolina, Washington and West Virginia, as well another Cape Coral event and additional fundraisers in Sarasota and on Florida’s East Coast.

The race series began 11 years ago to bring awareness to head and neck cancers and to raise money for those unable to afford costly recovery therapies that often aren’t covered by insurance or which require a very high copay.
