The Fort Myers Miracle “Diamond Cutters” have earned the 2013 Florida State League Sports Turf Crew Municipality Award recognizing the Hammond Stadium grounds crew for their ongoing commitment to excellence in field maintenance. This marks the Hammond Stadium crew’s 15th year winning the Municipality award, given to the best city- or county-operated sports turf crew in the Florida State League.
Operated by Lee County Parks and Recreation, Hammond Stadium is one of five county-owned baseball complexes. The awards, initiated in 1990, are selected by field managers and pitching coaches of each team in the Florida State League. In addition to winning 15 Municipality awards, The Miracle, with Sports Turf Manager Keith Blasingim, won two Best Overall Awards in 2002 and 2003, a Florida State League Commendation Award in 2004
“This season was exceptional because not only did the grounds crew have to manage the normal wear and tear on the stadium grounds, but they had to contend with heavy rains this summer and worked especially hard to keep the fields pristine for play,” said Jeff Mielke, executive director, Lee County Sports Development. “The Hammond Stadium grounds crew does an amazing job throughout the season and year-round. The award is well deserved.”
Hammond Stadium hosts nearly 130 days of baseball from the beginning of Minnesota Twins Spring Training to the Miracle season and the Roy Hobbs World Series in the fall.
