tcTortuga Capital, LLC, a privately held investment management firm, has announced the opening of its office location in Fort Myers. Tortuga Capital was founded by Matthew DePaola, co-founder and chief investment officer, and Christopher DePaola, co-founder and chief operating officer.

Tortuga Capital follows a “deep value” investment approach, seeking stocks whose prices are substantially below underlying value. “As the investment industry continues to consolidate, fewer and fewer funds are following a deep value approach,” said Matthew DePaola, co-founder and chief investment officer, Tortuga Capital.” “We started our firm, in part, to provide clients with an investment approach which they can seldom achieve elsewhere,” added co-founder and chief operating officer, Christopher DePaola.

Tortuga Capital offers its services through separately managed accounts. The firm currently offers two investment strategies:  A Deep Value and Special Situations Strategy, and a Focused Value Strategy. Both strategies follow the same investment philosophy but differ in their risk profile.

Matthew DePaola feels the firm’s service offerings are unique among the many investment firms in Southwest Florida: “Most financial advisers don’t actually invest their client’s capital, but rather establish and oversee asset-class allocations, and advise on tax and retirement planning matters,” he said. “These are very important services; however, actual investment management is generally outsourced to mutual funds and other institutional investment products. As such, there is a tremendous disconnect between a client and the individuals investing her money. At Tortuga Capital, our clients know what securities they own and why they own them.  I think there is a lot to be said about that investment model.”

Matthew DePaola is a long-time practitioner of the deep-value investing approach. He has broad experience in business finance and asset valuation, and has engineered the leveraged purchase and recapitalization of several small businesses. He has also spent several years as a financial analyst in the residential real estate development field. He earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University of Florida’s Hough Graduate School of Business and holds a bachelor’s degree in Finance from Florida Gulf Coast University.

Christopher DePaola oversees the firm’s regulatory compliance and business operations and serves as an analyst on special assignments. Prior to cofounding Tortuga Capital, he had overseen the physical improvements, financial recapitalization and repositioning efforts for a small real estate partnership. He has also overseen the operations for several small businesses. He earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida’s Levin College of Law, holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of Florida and is a member of the Florida Bar.
