Lee County hosts 28th annual Roy Hobbs World Series Oct. 22 – Nov. 19

1Baseball players from around the world will convene in Lee County for the 28th annual Roy Hobbs Baseball World Series from Oct. 22 to Nov. 19. Over the course of the four-week tournament, a total of 240 teams of adult, amateur baseball players will compete within seven divisions, taking the fields in five Lee County sports complexes, including Terry Park, City of Palms Park, JetBlue Park, the Lee County Player Development Complex and the CenturyLink Sports Complex.

One of four Roy Hobbs events held in Fort Myers annually, last year’s Roy Hobbs World Series had a direct economic impact of more than $8 million for Lee County over the course of the tournament, according to Jeff Mielke, executive director, Lee County Sports Development. The 2016 event will feature 28 days of baseball for Roy Hobbs’ 28th World Series, which has been hosted in Lee County for the past 24 years.

Operated by Lee County Parks and Recreation, Lee County’s five county-owned baseball complexes play host to more than 200 days of amateur baseball tournaments a year when they aren’t being used for spring training games. The estimated economic impact of these events is $50 million annually.

Named after fictional baseball hero Roy Hobbs as depicted in the book, “The Natural,” by Bernard Malamud, the Roy Hobbs Baseball annual World Series in Fort Myers has grown from 54 teams in 1993 to a total of 240 expected teams this fall.
