NCH first responders receive holiday turkeys in show of appreciation

A partnership between the Wynn family, Naples resident Audrey M. Petersen and NCH Healthcare System resulted in pre-holiday donations of 5,000 turkeys to thank first responders for their heroic efforts during the pandemic.

One by one, doctors and nurses lined up with medical and professional staff members on Dec. 17 at Baker Hospital in Naples, each bringing home an entrée to enjoy with their loved ones.

“The Wynn family has proudly supported NCH and its team members for many years, particularly in 2020 when these health care heroes have been on the frontlines keeping our community safe,” said Michael Wynn, president of Sunshine Ace Hardware and second vice chair on the NCH Board of Trustees. “We wholeheartedly welcomed the partnership with NCH on this venture, and with generous support from Mrs. Petersen, we were able to offer this simple gesture of thanks to health care workers.”

Jeff Wynn, president of Wynn Properties and a corporate officer at Wynn’s Market, said the idea of a holiday donation arose during the summer. Wynn’s Market tapped into its network of food suppliers and logistics experts to arrange the delivery.

“It makes us feel good that we could give back to this great community and the doctors and nurses that have helped us so much,” Jeff Wynn said.

Dating back to the founding of Wynn’s Market in 1938 and Sunshine Ace Hardware in 1958, the family-owned, Naples-based companies have supported dozens of charitable causes and community initiatives. During the pandemic, the businesses have helped provide several care packages and personal protection equipment (PPE) to health care workers.

NCH and medical professionals around the nation continue encouraging residents to practice social distancing and limit large gatherings, including family celebrations around the holidays. However, NCH President and CEO Paul Hiltz gladly welcomed the donation to help honor employees for their service.

“Our hospital family is grateful to the Wynn family and Mrs. Petersen,” Hiltz said. “We’ll enjoy a nice, relaxing – but small – Christmas and holiday dinner with a delicious turkey.”
