The Royal Shell Group of Companies has donated $5,000 to A Seahorse Dream, a not-for-profit fundraising public art project benefiting the expansion of Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The anticipated 200,000-square-foot new facility will increase the hospital’s current 98 beds to 148 beds to better serve the more than 4,000 children admitted annually.

“It’s hard to think of anything more important than helping kids get healthy and live their best life possible,” said Randy Bacik, CEO of Royal Shell Vacations, “We are proud and excited to be part of this fun endeavor to help the Children’s Hospital deliver the complex, specialty care needed to locally-serve the youngest, most innocent patients.”

In addition to the financial contribution, Royal Shell joins other businesses in having a five-foot tall seahorse statue decorated and prominently displayed throughout the region. Royal Shell’s seahorse, appropriately referred to as Rochelle or Shelley, is being designed by award-winning artists of the Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild, the area’s only art league solely devoted to three-dimensional art. Beads, metal, glass, clay, stone and fiber are among the materials being used to create the mosaic designed seahorse. Shelley will be adorned by the Royal Shell logo created with liquid and powered glass, beaded earrings and necklace, eyelashes made of wire, an iridescent fabric fin and other sparkling elements.

“This is the most fantastic and worthy cause we could ever imagine participating in, and as our group grows, we are looking for more charitable endeavors just like this,” said Lorraine Capps, president of the Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild. To follow Shelley’s progress or learn more about the guild, find them on Facebook.

View the finished Shelley and all the other seahorses at a public exhibit on Nov. 20 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Harborside Event Center in the historic Fort Myers River District. Then, for several months following, the seahorses will remain on public display at various locations. A Seahorse Dream will culminate with a gala dinner and auction of select seahorses to take place on March 7 at Sanibel Harbour Marriott Resort & Spa.
